Description

Formerly the A 1 motorway from Cologne to Kamen crossed the Wupper valley over a bridge comprising two carriageways, each with two traffic lanes. In order to create six traffic lanes, a completely new bridge was built parallel to the existing bridge. The new bridge carries three lanes of traffic in the direction of Kamen.

The new bridge with 7 spans consist of a single composite steel-concrete box cross-section with a constant structural height of approx. 3.70 m.

The carriageway was built from the Cologne abutment using the incremental launching technique. The steel structure of the bridge was constructed and moved into place in 6 stages. When this had been completed pre-fabricated concrete plates were placed on top. Finally the deck was completed with cast in situ concrete.
